Purpose

S22 supports consistent treatment of electrical hazards and design practices in equipment supplied to semiconductor manufacturing environments. It informs the electrical portion of a broader equipment risk and safety program.

Where it applies

Apply the current guideline when required by the customer, equipment safety program, or assessment scope, together with applicable laws, codes, standards, site rules, and competent engineering judgment.

Who implements it

Qualified electrical and safety engineers own interpretation and design. Controls, software, and service teams must preserve intended protective behavior during operation, diagnostics, maintenance, bypass, and field modification.

Relationships and dependencies

  • Complements the broad equipment EHS framework referenced by S2.
  • Uses risk-assessment reasoning consistent with S10.
  • Supports electrical safety for UTV and overhead systems considered under S17.

Practical implementation guidance

  • Document power sources, isolation, protective devices, grounding, stored energy, panels, wiring, and service access.
  • Include control-power loss, restart, remote reset, bypass, diagnostic, and field-modification scenarios.
  • Verify the integrated equipment against the project’s approved revision and jurisdictional requirements.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming control software can compensate for missing electrical protective measures.
  • Ignoring auxiliary, facility, UPS, or stored-energy sources during isolation planning.
  • Treating an internal design review as an independent conformance assessment.
